Characterizing directed path graphs by forbidden asteroids

چکیده
An asteroidal triple is a stable set of three vertices such that each pair is connected by a path avoiding the neighborhood of the third vertex. Asteroidal triples play a central role in a classical characterization of interval graphs by Lekkerkerker and Boland. Their result says that a chordal graph is an interval graph if and only if it does not contain an asteroidal triple. In this paper, we prove an analogous theorem for directed path graphs which are the intersection graphs of directed paths in a directed tree. For this purpose, we introduce the notion of a special connection. Two non-adjacent vertices are linked by a special connection if either they Contract grant sponsor: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Asteroidal quadruples in non rooted path graphs
A directed path graph is the intersection graph of a family of directed subpaths of a directed tree. A rooted path graph is the intersection graph of a family of directed subpaths of a rooted tree. Rooted path graphs are directed path graphs. Several characterizations are known for directed path graphs: one by forbidden induced subgraphs and one by forbidden asteroids. It is an open problem to ...
متن کاملCharacterizing path graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs
A path graph is the intersection graph of subpaths of a tree. In 1970, Renz asked for a characterization of path graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. We answer this question by determining the complete list of graphs that are not path graphs and are minimal with this property. 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 62: 369–384, 2009

We present a linear time algorithm to greedily orient the edges of a path graph model to obtain a directed path graph model (when possible). Moreover we extend this algorithm to find an odd sun when the method fails. This algorithm has several interesting consequences concerning the relationship between path graphs and directed path graphs. One is that for a directed path graph, path graph mode...
متن کاملForbidden subgraph characterization of extended star directed path graphs that are not rooted directed path graphs
An asteroidal triple in a graph is a set of three non-adjacent vertices such that for any two of them there exists a path between them that does not intersect the neighborhood of the third. An asteroidal quadruple is a set of four non-adjacent vertices such that any three of them is an asteroidal triple. In this paper, we study a subclass of directed path graph, the class of extended star direc...

An asteroidal triple is a set of three independent vertices in a graph such that any two vertices in the set are connected by a path which avoids the neighbourhood of the third. A classical result by Lekkerkerker and Boland [10] showed that interval graphs are precisely the chordal graphs that do not have asteroidal triples. Interval graphs are chordal, as are the directed path graphs and the p...
